The development of plastics and the history of plastic manufacturing dates back to around 1860. A U.S. billiard ball and pool company known as Phelan and Collander offered a staggering prize of $10, 000 to anyone able to design and come up with a substitute for natural ivory. J. Wesley Hyatt, an entrant who did not win, created a cellulose offshoot for the competition.
This revolutionary product would later be patented using the term Celluloid, and would rise to evolve into a roaring success. It was used in the manufacturing of products that range from dental plates to men’s collars. Over the coming decades, more and more derivatives of plastics were introduced into the economy. These included modified natural polymers that were manufactured from cellulose products.
1920s and Onwards – The Future Of Plastic Manufacturing
It was in 1920 that a significant breakthrough occurred in plastic manufacturing. Many new plastics were designed in the next 20 years, including methyl methacrylate, nylon and Teflon. Today, we enjoy our modern plastic products thanks to the trails that visionaries like W. H. Carothers blazed.
